Film drama roman fantasi The Shape of Water terpilih sebagai Film Terbaik di ajang Critics 'Choice Awards, yang digelar di Barker Hangar di Santa Monica, California, Minggu lalu waktu setempat. Besutan sutradara asal Meksiko, Guillermo del Toro itu, juga jadi film paling banyak dinominasi tahun ini, dengan empat penghargaan, yang di antaranya, juga dimenangi Del Toro sebagai Sutradara Terbaik.
Sementara itu, Frances McDormand terpilih sebagai Aktris Terbaik lewat Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; dan Gary Oldman sebagai Aktor Terbaik lewat Darkest Hour. Keduanya melanjutkan kemenangan mereka di ajang Golden Globe Awards beberapa hari lalu untuk kategori drama.
Seperti Golden Globe, kembali James Franco berjaya sebagai Aktor Terbaik untuk kategori komedi lewat The Disaster Artist; dan Margot Robbie sebagai Aktris Terbaik dalam kategori komedi lewat I, Tonya. Meski begitu, Film Komedi Terbaik justru digaet oleh The Big Sick besutan Michael Showalter. Film Laga Terbaik tahun ini jatuh pada Wonder Woman, dan seperti diduga banyak orang Coco lagi-lagi menang sebagai Animasi Terbaik. Sementara Film Fiksi Ilmiah atau Horor Terbaik digaet oleh Get Out.
Franco dikabarkan tak menghadiri acara ini, seiring makin memanasnya kabar tak sedap yang menyebutkan keterlibatannya dengan kasus pelecehan di masa lalu yang dilakukannya. Akankah kasus ini akan menjegal jalan Franco menuju Oscar?
Yang jelas, dalam sepuluh tahun terakhir, ajang ini dianggap “bayangan” penjurian Oscar, karena delapan film terbaik terbukti sama, kecuali The Social Network (2010) dan La La Land tahun lalu.
Critics’ Choice Awards juga memilih film seri dan film untuk TV terbaik tahun ini, yang tak disebutkan dalam artikel ini.
