When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 released in 2017, it had a lot of expectations to live up to, and it delivered. In fact, it is being regarded as one of Marvel's best creations. Director James Gunn did brilliant work to ensure that the movie was nothing short of amazing. Good news, he will return to direct the third instalment of the franchise.
As we look forward to Vol. 3, here’s a look at some fun facts about the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
David Bowie Suppose to Have Cameo Role
One could guess that James Gunn is a David Bowie fan when the song, 'Moonage Daydream' was featured in the movie, Guardians Of The Galaxy. But what might surprise you is that Gunn and head honcho of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, had wanted to get Bowie to play a cameo role in Vol. 2. Gunn confirmed that it was an idea that Feige had brought up. Bowie was sick at that time, but there was still a chance to turn this dream into reality. However, the evergreen David Bowie passed away before they could formalise it.
James Gunn and Edgar Wright Discussed Soundtracks
As surprising as this sounds, Edgar Wright and James Gunn sat down together and worked things out so that there were no similar pop-infused soundtracks in the two films- Baby Driver and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Both movies have a character who loves to indulge in music. There is Star-Lord with his Walkman filled with amazing mixes playing on loop, and then we have Baby who possesses a wide collection of iPod gems, from classic rock to modern hip hop.
The music was instrumental in making certain scenes stand out and taking the action forward in both films. Wright was hence worried that overlapping soundtracks might destroy the uniqueness of his collection. So he approached Gunn, and they had an amusing conversation regarding their movie soundtracks.
When Yondu Went Rogue
Do you remember when Yondo (Michael Rooker) appears in a scene and shouts, “I’m Mary Poppins, Y'all"? According to Rooker, he had performed that scene quite a number of times before that, using ad-lib versions of the same line. Even Gunn admits to having behind-the-scenes footage of Rooker uttering that line laced with almost all curse words that you can possibly imagine!
The Struggle for Ego
The role of Ego was the next big thing in Hollywood. Everyone waited with bated breath to see who would finally bag it. Stellar names were in contention, like Matthew McConaughey, Liam Neeson, Christoph Waltz, Alec Baldwin, Gary Oldman, Viggo Mortensen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Robert De Niro and Mel Gibson. You can understand why this would be a director's favourite nightmare. Kurt Russell emerged victorious.
Kurt Russell Didn’t Watch What?
Kurt Russell received appreciation worldwide when he brought the character of Ego to life in the movie, but it might surprise you to know that he has actually never seen the first movie. It was only after he was cast that he watched it.
Stallone's Stakar Was a Member of the Original Guardians of the Galaxy
There were five post credit scenes in the film, much to the fans' delight. In the second post credit scene, we find Sylvester Stallone's character, Stakar Ogord talking to a group of characters who you may not recognise unless you are an avid fan. These were the original Guardians of the Galaxy and Stallone was telling them that it was about time they got reunited. Kevin Feige confirmed that Stakar himself was an original Guardian.
Film for the Outcasts
The Guardians of the Galaxy films aim to represent beings who stray from a life of normalcy, as a result of which they are often labelled as outcasts. So according to Gunn, these two films about outcasts were scripted for all the outcasts in the world.
Cut, Cut, Cut
Glenn Close actually shot certain scenes as Nova Prime Irani Rael, but you never got to see her in Vol. 2. Well, her scenes were excluded from the final film during the editing sessions because of the already considerable running time.
Vin Diesel's Groot voice Was Absolutely Original
We are sure that you find Groot adorable, and to imagine a big, grown man like Vin Diesel responsible for voicing this tiny being becomes difficult sometimes. Well, Vin Diesel needed little help to create Baby Groot's high-pitched voice. In fact, his performance was so good that it hardly needed any digital alterations.Vin Diesel replicated Groot's voice for all the sixteen foreign- language releases.
