Alien: Covenant
Fans of the Alien franchise were largely disappointed by Prometheus because they saw it as a quasi-prequel that answered few questions. Therefore, this film is Ridley Scott’s attempt to finally bridge the two together. It features a space crew discovering a planet they believe to be paradise, only to find out that they are at the mercy of the sole survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition, the “synthetic” David, and a horde of freakish creatures. Try not to blink.
Fun fact: Michael Fassbender, who reprises his role as David, also plays another android called Walter – an assistant to the crew of this new colony ship.
Star Wars: Episode VIII
The Force Awakens left us with many questions. Naturally, little is known about the newest chapter in this well-loved saga, but what we do know is that it will shine a light on Rey as she continues her larger-than-life journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker. This will sadly be the last film to feature Carrie Fisher, and with the release slated for December, you’ve really got to wait a very long time with bated breath.
Fun fact: Director Rian Johnson has said that Star Wars: Episode VIII took inspiration from Twelve O’Clock High, Letter Never Sent, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Three Outlaw Samurai.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Starring Tom Holland, a fresh-faced 20-year-old English actor and dancer, this film picks up where Captain America: Civil War left off and shows Peter Parker fighting against the villainous Vulture while trying to also live his life as an ordinary high school student. Want to know who else is in it? Michael Keaton, Donald Glover and, of course, Robert Downey Jr., the latter of whom is surely reason enough not to miss the show.
Fun fact: Iron Man’s appearance marks the first time a Spider-Man movie has included another superhero character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
War for the Planet of the Apes
There’s certainly something about Caesar, the leader of the evolved ape tribe. Following the epic war against humans in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, he is now out for blood to avenge his kind. Woody Harrelson stars as a ruthless human colonel, while Judy Greer returns as Caesar’s mate, Cornelia, who as we know by now is the one who maintains the status quo in their community. Brace yourself for a swingin’ ride.
Fun fact: Planet of the Apes films kicked off in 1968. A long time.
Dunkirk
Fans of Christopher Nolan will no doubt be very much looking forward to this British war action thriller, which he wrote, co-produced and directed. Set in World War II and centred on the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, the film stars Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and One Direction's Harry Styles. Instead of CGI, real naval destroyers were used for the sea battle sequences. Super raw.
Fun fact: This is Nolan’s first movie since Insomnia not to feature Michael Caine.
Transformers: The Last Knight
Michael Bay returns to the silver screen with more explosive action, perhaps even more than ever since this will be the final Transformers film directed by him. While the plot is still under wraps, it will possibly see Optimus Prime searching through the cosmos for the Quintessons, while Cade Yeager battles a new alien threat that brings back Lennox into the thick of crossfire. Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci reprise their roles from Age of Extinction.
Fun fact: Transformers: The Last Knight is the second Hollywood action movie shot in Cuba, following on from Fast & Furious 8.
